Abnormal Psychology Spring 2016:
Instructions for Mid-Term Paper
Book: Not so Abnormal Psychology: A Pragmatic View of mental illness
By: Ronald B. Miller
For the mid-term paper in Abnormal Psychology, choose one of the various psychiatric diagnoses discussed at length in the textbook (Miller, 2015). Your options here with this as follows:

• Alcohol and substance abuse disorders
• Anorexia
• Antisocial personality disorder
• Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADD or ADHD)
• Avoidant personality disorder
• Bulimia
• Depressive disorder
• Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
• Histrionic personality disorder
• Narcissistic personality disorder
• Obsessive-compulsive disorder
• Pervasive developmental disorders (includes autism)
• Phobias
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
• Schizophrenia
• Schizotypal personality disorder
• Social anxiety disorder

After choosing one of the above disorders, you are expected to complete an in-depth analysis of its historical development and current understanding in clinical mental health settings. For this you will want to talk about the time period the diagnosis or a related diagnosis first started being used. Histrionic personality disorder, for example, is a relatively new diagnosis, but similar symptoms were previously described in terms of hysteria. An analysis of that diagnosis would thus include a section describing earlier historical periods in which hysteria was used as a term to explain behavior.

After tracing its history, discuss other relevant information about how the diagnosis is understood today (e.g. what are its characteristic symptoms, what are the demographics of people diagnosed with it, what are the suggested forms of treatment for it according the DSM).
