Cultural sensitivity

Different countries in the world have their own culture and way of life. I once had an opportunity to go to India for studies as part of an exchange program for one year. I was born in the U.S.A and I have never stepped out of the country since I was born. I had never experienced any other culture apart from the one I have known at home. I was placed with an Indian family who welcomed me, and helped around with anything I needed. Luckily, the family had a son who was my age, and hence it was easier to communicate and interact with him. During my stay, I got to learn a lot about the Indian culture. People from different countries are quite diverse and do things in a certain way.

Living in India for me was an eye opener as it helped me look at people in a different way. In India, people are quite wordy when it comes to communicating. For instance, there was a time I had a slight misunderstanding with one of my classmates. He expressed himself in an indirect manner using a lot of words in order to maintain our good relationship. The communication style in India is very different from how people communicate back at home. In the U.S.A, people express a problem in a direct and concise manner. The experience sharpened my communication skills and made me learn how to communicate with people in a better way. I learnt we can express ourselves in different ways aside from what I am used to and still be able to communicate.

The experience was quite enriching as I was able to expand my mind on how to communicate with other people. No culture can be termed as being superior compared to another. It is important for everyone to be open and accommodative when it comes to other cultures.
