The case study that I chose for our discussion is very basic and involves internal controls. I chose this case because of the simplicity but also to discuss how other departments of this organization could have contributed with minimizing the risks of fraud. What were the other documents could the auditors provide OR what contributions could have been made from the other departments? Case 3.1 Trolley Dodgers In 1890, the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers became a professional baseball team. In 1958, the Dodgers moved from the New York City area to Los Angeles. Mr. O’Malley, owner of the Dodgers, saw the opportunity to introduce a professional baseball team to the West Coast. What he really saw was the opportunity to increase his profits! Since the move to Los Angeles, the LA Dodgers have become an iconic professional baseball team. Their franchise grew from hundreds to millions in over a matter of years. In the later part of the year 1997, the O’Malley’s sold their franchise for $350 million to Rupert Murdoch. Mr. Murdoch, a media mogul, praised the O’Malley’s for a long and successful franchise. During an interview, Mr. O’Malley praised his long time accountant, Edward Campos, for making the organization so successful. Mr. O’Malley trusted Mr. Campos with his payroll operations. Unfortunately, fraud was discovered when Mr. Campos became ill. It had been discovered that Mr. Campos had been embezzling money and conducted some payroll fraudulent activity. Again, what could have been done to minimize the risk of fraud? What kind of internal controls, reporting, etc. could have been done to prevent this type of fraudulent activity?
