Three Topic From The Book The Composition Of Everyday Life

This paper looks at three topics from the book, “The Composition of Everyday Life.” The topics include the Floppy Disk Fallacies, the American Consumerism, and Dog Delusion. The paper reviews the three topics by discussing what each one entails. In the Floppy Disk Fallacies, the Elizabeth Bohnhorst brings out her opinion to replace traditional methods used to teach younger grades using new technologies, specifically the computer technology. She suggests the use of the new computer technology in learning but recommends that books should be utilized alongside the newly established teaching technology. Books and other traditional methods of teaching and learning are very critical especially to the lower grade levels like the K-6. Students at this level can hardly rely on computers entirely since the complete adoption of computer technology in learning could damage the learning experience and creativity of children. Students need to be given a chance to learn basic fundamentals, which are only possible on using books and other traditional methods. This should been ensured despite the fact that computers are increasing their popularity in the society and in learning. She has a great fear that computers may completely take over the traditional system of learning in many countries like America.

In the Dog Delusion, Pederson talks of a time when the dog was his ‘co-pilot’. The article seems to talk of raising one’s status to a point where no one in the typical society would have imagined. The dog, of all people or creatures, is elevated to the point of being a co-pilot. This seems too funny to many people. This was perhaps a time when people hardly imagined that pets could be very critical to human life. This trend has been changing from the recent past. Pets, especially dogs, have increased in their importance to human life, an aspect that has even contributed to the publication of books and magazines about their culture. Such publications could involve the lives of dogs or other pets and their lives with human beings. Pets’ popularity comes due to the growing practice and culture of humans to take them a part of their friendships and social lives. Unlike sometimes in the past where some pets like dogs where considered harmful, dogs have completely turned out to be best friends and harmless creature. They are best taken for accompaniment, security, and other social benefits among being an aspect of beauty.

In the case of the American Consumerism, Jamie Bentley talks much on economic aspects in life. The author sees some values in redirecting attention to certain aspects in economic issues. The author’s work is mainly a response to the work of Simon Benlow, who on the other hand talked about an apology to the future generations. Bentley supports the idea that consumerism as a culture has much harmful effects on the environment. Such effects could in turn be transferred to the future generations. The author also talks about the many harms that consumerism has on the American society at large. The American culture is considered to have great and documented obsession with high consumption of things. She supports that the harm posed to the future generations is almost irreparable. Other than harming the environment, the American consumerism culture is also causing economic problems to individuals. The author suggests that Americans can only save their society and the future generations by reducing their materialistic practices. She concludes that materialism undermines families and therefore this practice should stop or could be minimized.
