To understand what it takes for one to be called a proficient writer

Introduction

Writing is said one of the oldest form of art in the universe, as this was the process by which information was passed from one generation to another. There are many writers who have produced profound work that has changed the lives of the entire population. However, it has been observed that not all writers have all the convectional qualities which make a good writer. To understand what it takes for one to be called a proficient writer, we consider the work of Bloom and Smith in their book “Canon and Context.’

The writers have written several essays which focus on various elements of writing. They have emphasized on originality and creativity in any given piece of art. According to them, it is imperative that every writer bear in mind that the society is dynamic and therefore will require piece of art which is in line with the changing social issues. In addition to creativity and originality, they also demonstrate some sense of critical thinking and sense of empathy. The former focuses on the critical look at the social phenomena and explaining it in a way that the reader will grasp much of what is the reality on the ground. A sense of empathy calls for the act of explaining the social issues from the perspective of the affected people.

Though not explicitly demonstrated, the two writers have implied several writing elements in their work. One of the main one is the economy of words. This calls for the elimination of the unnecessary phrases by employing specific words. According to their work, too wordy piece of art may appear unappealing to the reader and therefore the writer will not have achieved his main objectives. The economy of words will make the writer use less time, space and others resources.

The other main element is that of choosing the most accurate words and vocabularies. Words convey meaning and if the writer is not careful, the intended meaning might not be passed. Choice of words demonstrates how rich the writer is in terms of the manipulation of language. Use of long sentences should be avoided by the use of jargon of words which may replace them. This helps to improve the quality of work.

The other elements of writing which are implied by the two writers are setting and characters. The former refers to the place where piece of art is taking place (Bloom & Smith, 35). The setting has been said to create a mood and important atmosphere which many readers may identify with. This makes the work even more real to them. Characters on the other hand are people, objects or animals which the writer deliberately chooses to use for the purpose of passing their information. It is important that the writer outline clearly the role of the major and minor characters in the story if their work is to be authentic.

Observing the above element, I would say that I have not been so keen on the vocabulary bit though I have focused on the rest. In conclusion, not all piece of writing is appealing to the readers for reasons such as poor choice of vocabularies, lack of setting for the stories and too wordy piece of art. For that reason, every writer should strive to ensure that all the discussed elements are followed.
