Decrease nurse-nurse on bullying in the workplace by incorporating evidenced-based education and role playing.

The EB practice change is attempting to use education to hopefully help prevent workplace violence and in turn have long-term better outcomes and experiences for nurses and the patients they care for.

Stake Holders: Nurses, nursing supervisors, and hospital upper management/administration.

Barriers may include: lack of time, push back from nursing staff, rejection from nursing supervisors or administration, poor participation rate or little interest from staff, and lack of funding for the study.

Ways we can increase participation is to offer incentives, assure staff knows that all answers will be confidential, and to schedule intervention classes at a variety of times. Also, it is important to educate upper management of the costs of bullying among nurses and how being low on staff members may lead to poor employee retention and low morale among the nurses.

Increasing Daily Aerobic Activity in School Age Children to Improve Academic Achievement

EB Practice Change:

The evidence based practice change that would be implemented into my practice is increasing children’s daily physical activity. I would do this by educating parents on the academic achievement benefits of increased physical activity as well as the health benefits. I would also have resources for the families I served on sports, yoga, gymnastics and other groups that their kids may join to get more physical activity throughout the week.

Stakeholders:

Stakeholders of my evidence based practice change would be academic leaders of the community, families, pediatric nurses, educators and pediatric doctors.

Anticipated Barriers:

Some barriers to this intervention would be the cost of joining extracurricular activities, possible push back from educators if class times is taken away for physical activity, children not wanting to participate in physical activity, and maybe parents not wanting to implement change in their children’s lifestyle.

Module 4 Lesson 1 Discussion

Proposed Evidence Based Change: Decrease re-admission in Psychiatric Hospital by providing discharge planning.

Stakeholders:  The stakeholders for this proposed evidence-based change would be the patient, the nurses, the inpatient providers, the patient’s psychiatric providers and the patient’s insurance provider.

Anticipated Barriers:

· Patient not understanding direction or information given.

· Patient not keeping post discharge appointment with psychiatric provider.

· Patient not having transportation to post discharge appointment.

· Patient having financial difficulties and unable to pay copay.

· Resistance from patient to discuss discharge planning.

· Resistance from staff to follow through discharge planning procedure.

· Develop plan to overcome barriers. Your plan should be clear and specific. Another person should be able to read your plan and replicate it.

· Discuss with colleagues.

· Describe the anticipated barriers to the change process in your institution (or wherever the change will be implemented). Include the organization’s culture, its’ reaction to change, and your leadership role for change.

· Identify the stakeholders for the change in practice you have chosen for your evidence-based change.
