My PICOT question is: In total joint replacement patients what the effect of silver infused dressings in comparison to cleaning with betadine is and applying dry gauze dressing on reduce surgical site infections within eight weeks.

P- Total joint replacement patients

I- Silver infused dressings

C- Cleaning with betadine and applying dry gauze dressing

O- Reduced surgical site infections

T- Eight weeks

The specific research approach will be quantitative. The quantitative research approach will provide data in numerical form to present a relationship between the two variables. Quantitative research highlights trends across data sets or study groups, but not the motivation behind observed behaviors (Goertzen, 2017). The results of quantitative research can be summarized, compared, or generalized. If a very strong relationship exists between two variables, the cause and effect relationship may be said to be highly probable or highly likely. The data will give insight to which intervention results in the reduced number of surgical site infections in total joint patients. The goal is to see a correlation between the intervention and the proposed outcome. The data collection method will be through biophysiologic measures. The in vitro biophysiologic measures collects data from participants by extracting biophysiologic material from them and subjecting it to analysis by laboratory technicians (Polit, 2016). Biophysiologic measures data collection method is precise and accurate. The advantage of this data collection method is that it is objective. A disadvantage of this data collection method is that it can be unknowingly contaminated altering results. To ensure that the data collected is reliable and valid, the people whom collect and record the data must be properly trained and monitored to ensure that procedures are diligently followed (Polit, 2016). Mishandling of information can ruin the validity of all the data collected. If there is a question on the validity of the data collected, the results will be charged as being invalid.
