The top three most important attributes for a leader are: ability to manage risk, seize opportunities, and maintain strategic business perspective (Graham-Leviss, 2016). Business growth and longevity is often a product of sustainable competitive advantage. In the modern day competitive business environment, it is difficult for a company to attain and retain competitive advantage unless it reaches for risky yet beneficial opportunities. As Burgelman (2015), illustrates, there is never a grand plan that guarantees future business success. It is about leadership. Business leadership is a journey characterized by strategy evolutions and transformations that ensure longer survival of a company. A leader must be able to seize opportunities, manage risks, and maintain strategic business mindset to be able to deliver lasting success for a company.

Fourne, Jansen, and Mom (2014) refer to it as an strategic agility that is necessary for any multinational enterprise to thrive in an emerging and established market. Both emerging and established markets present challenges and opportunities. Excelling in such situations requires a strategically agile leader; a leader that is quick to identify and optimize on opportunities while managing risks and maintaining strategic business perspective. Today’s business environment is increasingly heterogeneous and hypercompetitive such that unless a business leader nurtures these qualities, their longevity may be uncertain.
