Looking at financials is not the only way to measure an organization’s ethical behavior. There are 3 main non-financial measurement systems that are discussed in Chapter 9: Balance Scorecard, Six Sigma, and Triple Bottom Line. Taking a closer look at the Balance Scorecard system, Ferrell,Fraedrich, and Ferrell (2017) write that it is, “A management system that focuses on all the focuses on all elements that contribute to organizational performance and success, including financial, customer, market, and internal processes” (pg.250). This approach provides a much more comprehensive look at the ethical behavior of an organization. Shaw (1995) talks more about the Balance Scorecard approach when he writes, “The scorecard presents managers with four different perspectives from which to choose measures. It complements traditional financial indicators with measures of performance for customers, internal processes, and innovation and improvement activities” (pg.66). This helps organizations to better understanding how they are doing ethically as a whole, it is more than just the numbers and should be evaluated as so. In addition to the balance scorecard system, this chapter also discusses 2 other systems: Triple Bottom Line and Six Sigma. Ferrell, Fraedrich, and Ferrell (2017) write, “Six Sigma focuses on improving existing processes that do not meet quality specifications or that need to be improved. Triple Bottom Line…measure[s] social, financial, and environmental factors recognized that business has a responsibility to positively influence a variety of stakeholder” (pg.251). Each is useful in its own way and it depends on the organization and what they are wanting to look deeper into. They each have their own benefits and should be carefully considered.
