It was difficult to choose the most compelling topics in this course because I have enjoyed all of the course material. The debate of whether addiction was a disease or simply hereditary was interesting. I have always believed it to be categorized, or should be categorized as a disease; although addiction is hereditary, not everyone who is born from or raised by an addict will necessarily become one, although their higher risk. What was interesting, was to read my peers’ responses and their ideas and opinions. We can always learn from each other, and seeing others’ ideas and thoughts, open our eyes on a level we may haven’t thought of before on a subject.

Researching the various articles and published works of many doctors and psychologists regarding theories of addiction was interesting, as I could see we have come a long way with what we knew and thought in prior decades but even now, the medical community still seems to be split on agreeing on all aspects of the theories of addiction. I have always believed that the key to a successful recovery is a proper assessment and diagnosis.

After seeing my oldest brother misdiagnosed years ago with his addiction, even then I knew that was going to compromise his chances of recovery and it did. In Unit 2, we read and discussed how a proper assessment and diagnosis was imperative in treating addiction. Additionally, I have always stated that chemical addiction and mental health work together. Also covered in Unit 2, was material that showed how often the two are linked. CTU Online (2018). M.U.S.E. Due to my work schedule, I was not able to attend the live chats, but having them to view in the archives have always helped. Interacting with my peers is one of my favorite parts of online learning. Being able to share our thoughts, ideas and opinions opens our eyes to a different understanding of the material. As stated earlier, we can always learn from each other and we never stop learning. There is nothing I need clarified at this time.
