The topic I chose is Restraint
Problem statement
Aggressive incidents are due to various causes ranging from self-injury, frustration ,to staff. We need to understand how the restraint experience is perceived by the patient. Debriefing after an episode of restraints can be beneficial to the patient and staff.
Why this problem is significant
WE need to understand what precipitated the incident, How they felt while in restraint, how can they help themselves not get into the situation that leads them into restraint. Does debriefing after physical restraints help in alleviating future restraints. Does the use of physical restraints curve behavior in a psychiatric setting?
Rationale why this should be researched
We need to understand why one patient wants to be restraint, and for another, it’s a traumatic event. What can be done to avoid the use of restraints? What can be done instead?
Topic 2
P: Psychiatric patients after use of restraints. Nurses are conducting a debriefing.
Aggressive patients are placed in seclusion to prevent harm to others, and self-harming patients are placed in restraints in the absence of a contract for safety and contraindications to the form of restraints(e.g., sexual abuse) Patients are debriefed by nurses after the incident.
I: Patient debriefing on their experience in restraints
Debrief patient after the incident. Use the information to determine if future debriefing is necessary for repeat restraint users.
C: Debriefing a patient after each episode may not be beneficial to one who is in seclusion or restraints on a regular basis. Monitor if debriefing helps recurrent restraints when interventions that help are implemented as opposed to not debriefing one who is clearly violent and in seclusion for multiple times.
O: Alternatives to restraints. Factors precipitating restraints. Reduction in the use of restraints.
Debriefing and staff training will bring a reduction in the need for the use of restraints by reoffending patients.
