Choose either topic 1 or topic 2 and write an essay of approximately 2,000 words.

1. Choose an industry where you believe D’Aveni’s sphere of influence model can be applied (this should not be the examples used in the article in the course reading).

a. Present your arguments as to why D’Aveni’s model applies in the industry. (500 words)

b. Identify the spheres of influence. Include an assessment of how pivotal zones, buffer zones and forward positions contribute to stability in the market. (750 words)

c. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of these spheres of influence. (750 words)

2. Businesses lobby government to further their interests. In 2014 the New Zealand government considered the adoption of standardised (plainer) packaging on tobacco products. This has not subsequently been passed into legislation. In contrast, Australia introduced legislation to mandate standardised packaging in 2012.

3. Write an essay (2000 words) to compare and contrast the lobbying (influence) strategies used by tobacco companies and anti-smoking groups in both countries. Include:

 an assessment of the strength of influence of the key players in each country.

 a critical evaluation of the outcomes. What do you think were the key reasons for the difference in outcomes between the two countries and what role did influence play?
