What is your biggest motivator to perform well in the workplace?

I found an article online that discusses intrinsic and extrinsic rewards. I have always been that person that works harder when I receive intrinsic rewards than when I receive extrinsic rewards. The article states that extrinsic rewards such as pay raises, bonuses, and benefits played a more dominate role in previous eras whereas currently intrinsic rewards which are more psychological are more significant now (Thomas, 2009). Everyone likes more money and it is a good way to know you are doing well at work but for me it does not last long as a motivator.

I am more motivated by honest feedback, verbal encouragement, and a sense of accomplishment. Per Thomas (2009), the four primary intrinsic rewards are 1) sense of meaningfulness, 2) sense of choice, 3) sense of competence, and 4) sense of progress. The article goes on to say that employers, managers, trainers, and HR reps do not always utilize these types of rewards although they do recognize that they are powerful motivators for themselves; instead they assume that others are motivated more by money and self-interest.

What motivates you to perform at a higher level today than you did last week?
