Purpose

To assess your ability to:

  • Compare and contrast selected theories and strategies of policing in America.
  • Apply critical thinking and reasoning skills to the discussion of policing strategies.
  • Compare and contrast selected theories of crime and offending, including economies of crime.

Overview

In this assignment, your professor will assign you to either the supporting or opposing side of the following debate topic: Should the United States Abolish the Exclusionary Rule of Evidence in Criminal Cases? Once you have been assigned a side/position of the debate, you are required to develop arguments in support of your position as well as arguments to counter your opponents (the opposing) position. You will also be placed on a debate team depending upon the size of the class; this will be your debate team for the length of the course. The debate consists of three phases namely, 1) position presentation, 2) position clarification or rebuttal of your opponent’s position presentation, 3) free-form dialogue, peer questions, and closings. Please review Debate Assignment: Overview for details of what is expected of you in the debate assignments.

A couple of tools have been provided for your use. For this assignment, you will utilize Discuss tool, by posting to your appropriate debate position and phases as you work to develop arguments in your team. You can also utilize Meet tool, which gives you the ability to present and record your arguments within your teams for your classmates to review.

Note 1: While you participate and engage in your assigned teams, you will, however be required to later submit a written debate analysis that includes all three phases. See the following assignment: First Debate Written Analysis. You will also be required to provide a peer review of your classmate’s arguments, see assignment: 1st Debate Reflection. Please refer to the following Sample Student Debate Argument with Instructor Comments in red ink on how to approach your debate arguments.

Note 2: In addition to this discussion post, your instructor will assign a team to both the supporting and opposing sides of the debate topic to debate the issue in a Meet session. The students not in one of the debating teams will be required to ask one intellectually framed question of each team in the debate (two questions per person).

To successfully complete the assignment, you are expected to read and study key points and all assigned readings. You should also familiarize yourself with the Debate Rubric provided. Ensure you cover all relevant information expected of you in the assignment.
