Directions:

First, write an outline (1 page max.) Include:

  • An interesting title – the following correctly spelled and carefully articulated information: The artist’s full name, Title of the work, Date of the work, Medium description including technologies, materials, web or internet aspects; and type/style – interactive installation, networked performance, single-channel video, or other.
  • Locations where piece has been or is exhibited (name 3).
  • Essay ‘body’ must address these 3 areas for full marks:

State major themes (cultural, artistic, technical, formal, personal) in the work. Discuss if technology plays a role to enhance or augment these themes, how the artist utilizes (or comments upon) Art historical ideas to create the work, critiques existing technologies or comments upon aspects of technology in the work.

Be clear on specifics of how “viewer engagement” is enhanced, augmented, or not through new media technology, or creates a means of interaction, or acts as another “channel” to add depth to the work. Discuss how this viewer engagement may develop or promote understanding of any themes.

Given “rhizomes”, “societies of control” “global villages” “electronic media”, the power of networked television, electronic images, and the Internet, how might Gilles Deleuze or Marshall McLuhan consider this art? How is it “new media” and how does it take on or differ from more traditional forms?

NOTE: Sources for your essay should be found on one-page outline.Students are expected to research the given artwork and present that research as a List of References, including, but not limited to links provided by Professor.
