Post a message that explains, from your perspective, where information technology, including e-commerce, has been and where it will go in the next five years. In addition, describe from a biblical worldview how businesses can reach and serve their consumers online. How does information technology and data help improve the daily operations of a business? The rapid advancements in technology have changed the way business is done in the 21st century. The information age that has been brought about by the seemingly universal access to the internet through personal computers, tablets, and mobile devices has opened the opportunity for individuals to have nearly infinite quantities of facts at their disposal at all times. This technology and data have enabled businesses to grow and expand at exponential rates. The amount of data, research, and analytics that can be generated at lightning fast speeds because of technology has been the impetus for growth in many businesses across all sectors. Technology, data networks, and the internet have also been a leading contributor to globalization with businesses able to operate from virtually anywhere in the world. Multinational enterprises can opt for countries with the most accommodating tax environments because networks and data infrastructures do not necessarily confine a company to one particular country. An article in The Annals of the American Academy in 1992 foreshadowed the value of information technology and its role in the world of business and in society as a whole, “the coordination, direction, and control of all social activity depend on information. As population and social networks increase in scale, institutions become more complex, and the physical environment is more thoroughly modified or synthetic, information becomes ever more valuable” (Coates, 1992). Technology has not only expanded the services sector of the global economy with the rise of e-commerce in the 21st century but also given more options to a better-educated consumer. This technology is enabling businesses to cut costs while increasing their reach and giving consumers to the ability to have greater options of the good or service they are seeking. The next five years for information technology will continue to offer businesses the ability to have access to data, analytics, and research that would not be possible without it being machine generated. IBM who has long been a tech giant predicts that the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence will be used to predict a humans mental and physical wellbeing, “Patterns in our speech and writing analyzed by new cognitive systems will provide tell-tale signs of early-stage developmental disorders, mental illness and degenerative neurological diseases that can help doctors and patients better predict, monitor and track these conditions” (“IBM 5 in 5| Five Innovations That Will Help Change Our Lives Within Five Years”, 2017). The Bible is clear that the greater information that is available the more equipped one will be to make a more sound decision. Businesses can reach and serve the consumer by giving them correct data to make informed decisions, “And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ” (Philippians 1:9-10, New International Version).
